Our Tips for Building a Better CV

You've found the perfect job, and you want to do everything in your power to land it?

One of the first steps is to write your CV - your first chance to make a good impression. So make sure it's convincing!

Prefer chronological or mixed CVs
The good old chronological CV allows the recruiter to quickly distinguish :
- the titles of the positions you've held;
- in which company or companies;
- the tasks you performed;
- the length of time you've been employed.

You can also opt for the mixed CV, which contains much the same information as the chronological CV, but also presents your skills and achievements.

But please don't opt for the skills-based CV! As the skills are listed one after the other and without any additional information, it's difficult to know where you developed these skills and for how long - there's nothing really clear in this kind of CV! As recruiters, we have very little time to spend analyzing a CV. So it's vital that we're able to find the information we're looking for quickly.

Adapt your CV to the Position

Write an objective in line with the position you're applying for. Take the time to read the job description carefully, and make the links with your skills. The tasks and requirements requested should be reflected in your CV, if you have carried out these tasks and/or meet these requirements. Never lie on your CV - it will catch up with you sooner or later, and in a negative way!

Be Concise, Clear and Consistent

Ideally, a CV should be 1 to 2 pages long. So it's time to do a little housekeeping, asking yourself what you should keep and what you should remove. For example, you can remove your high school diploma if you have more recent training. Positions that are not relevant to the job you're applying for, as well as old work experience, can also be removed.

Gather all essential information and structure it. If your CV isn't clear and concise, chances are the recruiter will reject it.

In the same vein, briefly describe your work experience, starting with the most recent to the oldest.

For Example :

- Job title;
- The name and size of the company (if it's not a well-known company, listing the sector of activity might be a good idea);
- Start and end dates of employment;
- Tasks performed;
- Achievements.

And don't be afraid to use numbers in your CV. They're excellent performance indicators! Use them, for example, to specify your language or computer skills.

Be consistent in the presentation of your CV. Use the same font (e.g. Arial) and one or two font styles (e.g. bold, italic or underlined). When it comes to colors, graphics and photos, adapt to your target job sector. If you're applying for a notary's office, your CV will need to be very different from if you're applying for a role in marketing!

At the top of your CV, make sure your contact details are clearly visible.
The more, the better: e-mail, telephone, LinkedIn, Skype and your address. It's best to include a phone number with voicemail. The aim is for the recruiter to be able to contact you as quickly as possible.

Keep your CV Impeccable

No spelling mistakes are allowed - proofread your CV or have it proofread! With all the proofreading tools available, there's no excuse.

Bonus

Make sure you have your English CV on hand, as you may be asked for it.

Happy writing!
